Rahul Mahajan
Rahul is the only son of late Pramod Mahajan, a famous politician and a member of the BJP and came into the media glare when his father was shot at by his own brother. Rahul was then seen comforting his sister and mother and maintaining a stoic demeanour, amidst rumours that he would be inducted into the BJP to follow his father’s footsteps. However, barely weeks after his father’s death, and while on his way to Assam to immerse the ashes in the Brahmaputra, Rahul was hospitalised in Delhi after an alleged cocaine overdose. The young scion of late Pramod Mahajan, the BJP star whom former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee literally catapulted to a position of pre-eminence by calling him a ‘Laxman’, was battling for life. As soon as Rahul recovered and was discharged from the hospital, he was arrested by the police on charges of drug possession and consumption. During this period, it was also discovered that Rahul had been suffering from anxiety and depression since a meningitis attack in 2002 and this had aggravated after his father’s death.
In August 2006, Rahul married Shweta Singh, someone whom he had known for 13 years. They were in flying school together in the US, and also flew for the Indian airline Jet Airways, where Rahul had worked for two years as a co-pilot. After that he became a consultant with an American company. During the tenure of National Democratic Alliance government he set up Integral Productions, a company that produced a programme called Tak Dhina Dhin for Doordarshan.
The marriage was reportedly on rocks for sometime with serious allegation of beating that Rahul meted out to his new wife and Shweta filed for divorce on 13-Dec-2007 on grounds of incompatibility and mutual consent of both parties.
